Free homepage audit

The homepage carries more jobs than any other page and usually gets the least honest feedback. This free scan reads yours cold and reports what a first-time visitor would fail to work out.

What you get: your FixSift score and your highest-priority findings, with the evidence behind each one. See what FixSift checks.

What the scan checks

This page reads the FixSift scan through one lens: the first screen, the route into the site, and what a stranger can conclude. The scanner is the same one the homepage uses — what changes is which findings are brought to the front.

The first screen

What is visible before any scrolling on a phone, and whether it answers what the site is for and who it is for.

Audience recognition

Whether a visitor can tell within seconds that the site is meant for someone like them.

Routing

Whether the page sends different visitors to the right places, or expects everyone to want the same thing.

The primary action

Whether there is one, whether it is dominant, and whether it is the action you actually want.

Supporting evidence

Whether the homepage proves its central claim anywhere, and whether the proof is near the claim.

Why this matters

A homepage is written by people who already know the answers, which is exactly why it drifts. Internal language creeps in, the offer becomes assumed, and nobody notices because everyone reading it already understands the business.

The first screen does most of the work. If a visitor cannot say what you do and whether it is for them before scrolling, the rest of the page is a much harder sell.

FixSift has no context about your company, which is the point: it reads the page with exactly the knowledge a stranger has, and reports what that stranger cannot conclude.

What this looks like in practice

A hero image with the value proposition below it

On a phone that means the first screen contains a photograph and nothing else.

Internal product names as navigation labels

Names that mean something inside the company mean nothing to a first visit.

A homepage that never says who it is for

Sites that avoid naming an audience in order to include everybody typically end up recognised by nobody.

Common issues we find

Too many jobs on one page

Recruiting, investor relations, three products and a newsletter on a single homepage dilutes every one of them.

The best line is not the first line

Clear, specific copy often exists further down the page, where fewer people see it.

Navigation instead of direction

A menu is not a recommendation. Pages that only offer navigation leave the visitor to do the work.

Stock imagery carrying the message

Generic photography occupies attention without communicating anything specific.

Frequently asked questions

Should I audit my homepage before a redesign?

It is usually the cheapest thing you can do first. A redesign that starts from a clear list of what visitors currently fail to understand is a very different project from one that starts from a visual brief.

Does FixSift only scan the homepage?

The free scan reads one page — by default your homepage. The paid audit discovers and analyses several of the site's important pages and reports across them.

Will it suggest new copy?

The free scan explains what is unclear. The paid rewrite product goes further and drafts replacement copy for the key sections, which you can edit before using.

Does it check the design?

It judges clarity, hierarchy and reading order rather than aesthetics. It will not tell you your colour palette is wrong.
